Common Sense is Not That Common: Gucci FW17
"I never want to go out wearing something sad," ~Alessandro Michele
Gucci's new creative director Alessandro Michele, has revived the brand's image which previously garnered its typical conservative tradition as a luxury brand. Michele's deep interest in Italian art and his love of nature comes through in his work. He blends the mythical with playful child-like designs enveloping more subtle meanings. The flow of floral fabrics, subtle dark tones mixed with a vibrant array of color, Gucci's FW 17 collection is a myth in itself.
'The Alchemists garden' was the theme of the show, held in Milan, at Gucci's new headquarters, a sprawling space of 377,000 sq ft. Here the designer's vision came to life with a futuristic tunnel featuring as the catwalk for models. The collection showcased over a 100 looks for men and women.
With triangular sillohettes, an array of floral motifs contrasted with traditional designs and textures. Girls in white tulle and lace gowns, carrying parasols and rings in the form of insects created a dream like image. A range of heavy spectacles scattered with diamantes, Michele's signature jazzy prints, and vintage inspired accessories along with lacquered designs and padlocked belts, gave an air of Willy Wonka's world colliding with Alice in Wonderland's.
The gender fluid, maximalist decorative style introduced by Gucci's creative director, in the past two years has influenced the trendsetters of this generation. Recent Gucci collections represent a history of art, culture and intellect. Rather than just a way looking stylish, Gucci has inspired a way of thinking, incorporating a fierce unapologetic artistic style.
Alessandro Michele described his inspiration saying "I was thinking of an Alchemists garden. I was concentrated on colors and prints, and looking at many books of flowers and animals.' True to his creative vision, he has collapsed time while keeping up with it. The show's invitation featured an album sleeve that read 'What are we going to do with all this future?” Inside it featured Florence Welch reading from Blake's Innocence and Experience along with A$AP Rocky reading Wentworth's love letter to Anne Elliot from Jane Austen's Persuasion recorded on a vinyl.
Diversity and creativity in fashion is the emblem of Gucci's new style. It's sparkly pieces along with raw wooden materials encapsulate the freedom to be expressive and true to yourself through fashion.
