MARC JACOBS: HIP HOP EVOLUTION

Nearing the end of fashion month with Paris being the last city this week. While most designers went for a 'wow-effect' on stage from glittery venus to being very selective from makeup to hair. One acclaimed designer that drifted from the norm this season was Marc Jacobs. Known for treading his own path, he furthered that this season by taking fashion to its origins; the streets. In a strip across from the Park Avenue Armory, with rows of folding chairs, with no music other than the sounds of the streets of New York, to mostly bare faced models, he showcased an intricate and self defining collection for Fall-Winter 2017.

Keeping a low profile with no interviews, Marc Jacobs was still able to state his inspiration for this seasons show which was inspired by the documentary 'Hip Hop Evolution.' The documentary itself is about a group of south bronx teenagers in the '70s who laid the foundation of hip hop and gave birth to the first rhythmic rappers. Featuring figures such as Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc, their influence on their generation of music and style still lingers.

While influences on music have been riveting, the street culture and style that came from this movement has defined street culture for decades. Marc Jacobs displayed this phenomenally with show casing extravagant shoes, both in size and style to neutral color palettes of many shades of browns and beige. The melange of street style fluidly moved with more conventional cuts and studded, blingy jewelry. Marc Jacobs described his collection commenting that "as a born and bred New Yorker, it was during my time at the High school of Art and Design when I began to see and feel the influence of hip hop on other music as well as art and style' The array of eye catching hats and details of key shaped earrings made the collection a success and proof that a show is more the clothes than special effects and lighting.

Furs and checkered coats over bright party dresses and vibrant patterned sweaters. Corduroy was a popular fabric this season, with Miu Miu also showing a range of styles fitted in the fabric. Marc Jacobs added that 'this collection is my representation of the well studied dressing up of casual sportswear. It is an acknowledgment and gesture of my respect for the polish and consideration applied to fashion from a generation that will be the foundation of youth culture street style'
